God Bless America

John Adams

'On November 1, 1800, just before the election, John Adams arrived in the new Capital City to take up his residence in the White House. On his second evening in its damp, unfinished rooms, he wrote his wife, "Before I end my letter, I pray Heaven to bestow the best of Blessings on this House and all that shall hereafter inhabit it. May none but honest and wise Men ever rule under this roof."'

God Bless America

(from the biography of John Adams)

  3. Wonderful post.

Speaking of John Adams, I'm just now reading Cokie Roberts' "Ladies of Liberty", which features Abigail Adams for much of the book; I highly recommend it if you're at all a history fan. Both she and John are such compelling, intelligent role models for us even now.

  5. I read John Adams' biography a few months ago but I had forgotten that quote. I remember re-reading it a few times because I liked it so much. Thanks for sharing!
