First Impressions

Don't you just love to be entertained in someone's home?  I'd rather dine at someone's table than at the finest restaurant in town.  There is something so warm and welcoming to be escorted into their private spaces.  Here are a few foyers or entry halls.

Do you feel a sense of anticipation--what's the rest of the house going to look or feel like?

Have you been transported to the South of France or Tuscany?  Some homes tell of the owners travels or heritage.  What does this foyer tell you?

Simple, clean and straight forward.  Honest.

Cozy.  The brick floor matches that of the front porch and the driveway.

Everyone seems to be talking about this style of hanging prints--the gallery wall.  Also, notice that the wooden floor has been painted.

(thanks to Southern Accents, Southern Living, and Mary Evelyn McKee.  You never disappoint.)

Does your foyer welcome your guest?  What does it say about you?  Tell me about it.

  2. I love all of these but the last one is truly my favorite. My dream is to have a wall of antique portraits going up my stairway. This looks a lot like my stairway too. I love everything you select...do you ever work in Ann Arbor, Michigan?

  3. I LOVE THEM ALL . My entry is large enough that it will be my office as well - I'm looking to Elsie de Wolfe....stay tuned.

  8. Foyer? I could only wish for a foyer in my small house in Seattle.

I love the clean and simple picture. I have a gallery wall in our living room.

  9. I LOVE painted floors. In fact, when we lived in AR, mother's bff started this trend. They had an artist come in and paint 'rugs' on the floors. It was so fantastic and was later featured in magazines and a book!

  10. Wow! What a beautiful layout and so fun to look at all those beautiful
homes! Of course, I love the first one the best! I wish I could say that my foyer is welcoming and inviting but that would only be true for the 5 and under crowd. We will greet you with the warmest welcome in the world, especially you, but you may have to step over a few naked Barbies to get inside. Along with a few other fun things.....:)

Thank you for putting my new button on your blog. What a sweetheart you are. Let's talk tomorrow. Big Hug to you my dear friend.

  11. Beautiful! I loved the brick floor and the painted floor. Our foyer is a sort of sad, neglected space, as we live in a 80's townhouse in LA. I dream of the day when I can live in a Monterey style colonial here with a welcoming and cozy entry.

  12. oh my...i would be scared if someone were to walk in my foyer right now. BUT i do love their appeal. i love the first one, and the doors in that entry way as well. i love the one with all the framed pictures/art around the staircase too. one day very soon, i will be attempting to do a 'gallery hallway'. i think you know what my subject matters will be in my gallery.
    have a lovely weekend.

  13. These are ALL beautiful, and this is a fantastics post. I must say, I love the bottom staircase particularly - it seems classically American. One of my favourite features of a good hallway has to be an original door - thick oak with a big brass knocker and brass bell, or if post Victorian, with the original stained glass. Love original Victorian tile work as well! Ours is the opposite - blanc de blanc modern - I really miss having a fantastic period property hallway! And HAPPY NEW YEAR Mrs. Smith Green!

  14. Sadly we do not have a proper foyer with a sweeping staircase and beautiful streaming natural light.
    (sigh)
    My favorite is the third.

I've left a little bit of love for you over in my neck of the woods. I hope you'll stop by.

  15. The first time I ever visited the Biltmore was at Christmas, and it snowed. It was beautiful! But freezing while waiting outside to get in!

  16. I enjoy having dinner guests but the one problem we encounter is they stay a little to long. My mom always says."well, it just means they had a really good time."

  17. I'm with you, I LOVE to go to people's homes and see what they look like. In fact half the reason I pay dues and go to my sorority alumnae meetings each year is to go see all the beautiful homes we hold the meetings in!

  18. My foyer says "Welcome to my home, can you see how much I love traditional, New England style interiors?" Lol.

My whole entrance is wallpapered in red and white toile. And not just any toile, with English Hunt scenes (not the usual French village kind).....that also says "I love the English Country House" look.

I absolutely love decorating and reading about it. You ought to see my book collection...I have more books than most interior decorating sections of Barnes & Noble. It's sorta ridiculous.

  19. I love your featured entryways especially the first one so bright and fresh looking.

I'm with you on dining on friends' house than on a restaurant, you feel much more relaxed and the conversations are more carefree and fun.

  20. great post ! Love the first image and LOVE the last one . . . I'm always a sucker from a wall packed with artwork.

as far as my own entry, after years of a 'console table/mirror/side chair' set-up, I recently turned it into my library with an 14 foot bookcase placed on the 'long wall.' Love it SO much more than ever.

don't know what it says about me?

  21. I absolutely love entries, and I loved your comment about preferring to dine at a person's dining room table rather than the finest restaurant in town.
