You Never Get a Second Chance

The Big Comeback
(Tria Giovan)

I'm thinking of having the front door painted.  I've always had a stained door so this is a big change for me--and I don't do change very well.  My set up would be similar to the door shown above.  I'll have a glass door with a solid door behind it.  I've thought it would be fun to have a punch of color  in the foyer.  Blue, green, red...humm, I just don't know.

For fun, here are a few pictures of lovely "first impressions".  Enjoy.

No color needed here--just oxygen.  I've gasped it all away!

What an interesting mix.  Traditional, contemporary, coastal, early American.  Anything goes.  Stained door.

Any one want to move in with me?  Looks like there will be plenty of room! (oxygen needed here too!)  Stained door--ugh, I'm so predictable!

Stained door, again! Casual, warm and welcoming.  This is a "take your shoes off" kind of house.

Yes, I know, I'm GSG and this is a green door, but isn't it great!  I'm leaning this way.  That is until I see something like this:

Decisions, decisions.

Alright blog friends, what kind of door do you see for GSG's future?  I'm all ears.

  1. I don't know about your future, but I adore a red front door. I plan on painting mine Valspar Posh Red. It's currently a baby blue with a bit of an aqua tint to it (not my choice). I'd love a stained door, but ours is steel and would require replacing the whole thing. If I had one that was currently stained, pretty and in good shape, I don't think I could change it.

  6. Check out Fine Paints of Europe. I haven't looked up the website, but I receive their catalogs in the mail. Fantastic enamels -- and they have a special door painting kit. Love it.

  13. I love red doors. Of course, the color depends on the style of your house--we have a mocha colored door and a robin's egg blue backdoor at our last house and I loved it. Our current one is stained, which works with our house, but, I am a big fan of colored doors. They just looks inviting!

  14. Hi Granny:
You know I love green! I painted our front door and shutters (house in Nashville) Benjamin Moore's Great Barrington green - which I would highy recommend! Your first picture, I know all too well (Charleston)I love that house! Also, thanks for your post on April Food day.

  15. We just painted our door Cafe on the Rivieria by Ralph Lauren. It's kind of navy but leans a little peacock-blue, too. I love it! Love all of the green doors I see, too. Sometimes even yellow, though I'm not sure how long I could live with it.

  17. There is a lot of meaning in the color of doors! The nanny across the street is married to an Asian man, and she said that in the Asian culture the color of a door is a very important indicator of the type of people who live inside the house. She said that black doors are bad - white doors are good. I wonder what she would say about a green door?

In my next home, I am determined to have a green door. I am going to paint it one of those beautiful greens by Farrow and Ball. In this house, which I hope to put on the market next spring, I will keep things neutral. Please let us know what you decide!

I love that first image of the yellow entry. Since I am househunting, I see a few houses a month. I saw the loveliest house based on a New Orleans Spanish Colonial. It had the widest entry hall that was the entire depth of the house, and at the end was a gorgeous floating staircase. Alas, the house was not well suited for 21st century family life, and it needed A LOT of work, but the entry was a dream.
